Acquired Tastes XLIII: Gay Pulp Fiction, Part 227 - Roadhouse Classics, Part 2 of 2

Acquired Tastes XLIII:
Gay Pulp Fiction, Part 227
Roadhouse Classics, Part 2 of 2

Today we take a final look at the Roadhouse Classics imprint published by Guild Press.

Guild Press operated out of Washington D.C. and Roadhouse Classics was just one of several imprints the company published. Roadhouse Classics published  between 1971 and 1972 (the publishing company shut its doors in 1972). A complete listing of Roadhouse Classics books does not exist. Based on the numbering system, I am guessing they published at least 33 titles.

Roadhouse Classics books were paper-wrapped pamphlet-sized booklets held together with staples in the middle. Many of them were fully or partially illustrated with photos. Typically the cover contained some reference to Guild Press and the PNC logo. The PNC logo represented the Potomac  News Company, Guild Press' distribution company. They operated out of a P.O. Box at Franklin Station in Washington D.C.

The numbering system? Pretty straightforward, beginning at RC-101 and continuing thusly.

The covers typically have a  strong flesh-colored or light yellow border acting as a frame for a graphic male photo, most likely lifted from one of Guild Press's many magazine offerings.

The authors names attributed to these books are authors who provided works for all of Guild Press' many imprints. These books originally sold for $2.25. Today, they are somewhat rare, but can be found for $25-$100.

Here are the next ten titles (that I could find). This concludes our look at Guild Press, it's history and imprints.

Acquired Tastes XLIII: Gay Pulp Fiction, Part 226 - Guild Press Award, Part 2 of 2

Acquired Tastes XLIII:
Gay Pulp Fiction, Part 226
Guild Press Award, Part 2 of 2

Today we take another look at the Guild Press Award imprint published by Guild Press.

Guild Press operated out of Washington D.C. and Guild Press Award was just one of several imprints the company published. Guild Press Award published  between 1969 and 1970. A complete listing of GPA books does not exist. Based on the numbering system, I am guessing they published at least 22 titles.

Guild Press Award books were paper-wrapped pamphlet-sized booklets held together with staples in the middle.

Non-existent. The same is true regarding any branding standards.

Many of the authors names attributed to these books are authors who provided works for all of Guild Press' many imprints. These books originally sold for $3.50 - $7.50. Today, they are incredibly rare, but can be found for $250 - $700.

Here are the five titles I would attribute to this imprint. I've thrown in a few extras for the fun of it, as well. All titles are softcover wraps unless noted otherwise.

--- ---

Homosexuality in the Military
Author: J. J. Proferes
Guild Press
196(?)

I could not find a publishing date for this one. There's also no branding other than the NPC logo - which helps assure it is a Guild Press book. Also, it's written by one of Guild Press's regulars, author J.J. Proferes.

--- ---

My Trip Around The World
Author: George Haimsohn
Illustrator: Etienne
Guild Press
1964

Here' Guild Press's iconic Percy in another color book. The poem is by George Haimsohn, a man of many talents and several pseudonyms.. He is the  co-creator of the musical comedy Dames at Sea. He wrote gay fiction as Alexander Goodman and was a sought after physique photographer under the name Plato. The illustrations are by the whimsical Etienne, whose real name is Dom Orejudos.

You can view a PDF version of this one at the Houston LGBT History site.

--- ---

Modern Fairy Tales
Autobiography Of A Camp
Author: Peter B. Luvvly
Guild Press
1964
Softcover Wrap

According to the Houston LGBT History site, Guild Press published three color books in all. A PDF version of this one can be viewed at their site.

Guild Press
1965

Compiled under the direction of Avery Willard. Includes a four page introductory essay on the appeal of leather. Very scarce and early illustrated exploration of leather worship, extensively illustrated with models acting out leather fantasies. Does not include full frontal nudity.  Avery Willard was a prominent photographer, filmmaker, actor, publisher, and gay rights activist. His archives are held at the New York Public Library.

No branding on the cover, so I thought I'd put it here.

Copies of this range from $279-$698.

Again, no branding, so I thought I'd stick it here.
