Sunday Diva / Three From The Hip: Judy Collins

Sunday Diva / Three From The Hip
Judy Collins

In my own, personal, big gay church, there is a wing dedicated to Those of the Heart. These are the singers, songwriters and muses who have spent a lifetime capturing various aspects of the human condition. Frequently, due to the whims of the music industry and the political climate, their lives and careers were not always their own... but they persevered... ultimately remaining true to their roles as seers of the heart. One such voice?

Judy Collins.

They say the eyes are windows to the soul.

If true, then Judy Collins has an amazingly beautiful soul; a certitude born out in her music.

With a voice like a breeze carrying the sound of the gentlest of birds... she sang her way 'round the world.

Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, indeed.

She appeared blessed. Favored.

But appearances can be deceiving.

For not all was well with our fair maiden.

Yet, for every challenge, she would find her way to a solution... eventually.

Sobriety came. Her eating disorder acknowledged. Thoughts of suicide and self harm.

To those suffering from similar issues, she offered up her lessons learned. One book. Then another. Lectures and presentations.

And yet, there was loss. Insurmountable.

A child, a boy, a man... her 33-year old son. Gone too soon.

In spite of it all... Judy continues, to this day, to face the world head on, through eyes which have seen so much, and with a heart that has known its share.

And still, she sings.

The gospel according to her?

Well, here are three from the hip, dropping from her lips.

The topic: Suicide

"I think suicide is sort of like cancer was 50 years ago. People don't want to talk about it, they don't want to know about it. People are frightened of it, and they don't understand, when actually these issues are medically treatable. For many centuries, suicides were treated like criminals by the society. That is part of the terrible legacy that has come down into society's method of handling suicide recovery. Now we have to fight off the demons that have been hanging around suicide for centuries."

"I think it's important for people to know that even though you look like you're put together, you can in fact have a problem which is ruining your life and determining your choices - not all of them terrific or healthy. I have friends who've tried suicide many times and haven't succeeded. I myself made an attempt, so I had a connection with that sort of group of people who have tried suicide at one time in their lives. My book... Singing Lessons, a memoir of love, loss, hope, and healing... talks about the death of my son and the hope that has been the aftermath of the healing from that tragedy."

"Recovering from the suicide of a loved one, you need all the help you can get, so I very much recommend a meditation program. The whole picture of how to recover from this has to do with body, mind, and spirit. That's applicable to any kind of depression. If I had not already been meditating, I would certainly have had to start. I've treated my own depression for many years with exercise and meditation, and I've found that to be a tremendous help."

Send In The Clowns - Judy Collins

The Blizzard - Judy Collins

And one more parting shot...

"It is true that I have had heartache and tragedy in my life. These are things none of us avoids. Suffering is the price of being alive."

Weekend Onesie: Flexible Joy

Weekend Onesie:
 Flexible Joy

Above all else, our sense of happiness needs to remain flexible.

Happiness is where you find it. And, as the saying goes... wherever you are? Well, there you are.

I've noticed a number of posts from bloggers already longing for summer. And I get that. I adore summer and cannot wait for it to get here, especially this year.

I know the vaccine is not going to be a fix-all, but at least I can sit under my tree at the prairie this year without fear of some looming plague wreaking havoc on my life.

However... reality check: it's only the end of January.

Here, in Minnesota? We have at least two, if not three months of winter to wait out.

So... for me? I need to concentrate on finding my 'happy' where I can. And, for me, that involves living in the moment.

So I treasure that those flames I get to watch in my gas fireplace. In a few months time? They will be a memory.

I treasure playing Civ5 on-line with my youngest sister in Wisconsin. Come summer? Well, we will both be busy doing something else.

And thermal socks? I adore them. The thick ones are sexy as hell. But, no... I won't be wearing them this summer.

Are any of these things my favorite thing in all the world? Nope, though I do appreciate them now.

And while I am almost certain to be writing a post in the next few weeks yearning for summer... I know I need to put off feeding that desire for as long as possible. I can accomplish that by altering my perspective regarding what brings me joy.

So, this weekend? Look at what you are doing. And if that thing brings you joy? Focus on that. Quantify it. Hold it close.

Let's keep our thoughts and feelings as flexible as possible and embrace our 'now'.

For, come summer?

Those things and activities will be as distant as summer seems now.

Friday Fun: Happy National Fun At Work Day

Friday Fun:
Happy National Fun At Work Day

Work, work, work... who needs it?

Well... I do fo' one. I gots bills to pay. Don't we all?

'Less you born with a silver spoon in your mouth? Well, you better be out there hittin' the pavement, baby.

Oh, yes, yes... I tell you, honey. I have seen me some things! Working this corner of mine. Things that made me shake my head.

Made me shake a few other things, too, if you know what I mean! Heh, heh, heh.

But it's all fo' that almighty dollar, don'tcha know. Mmm hmm.

Lawdy! The things I have done fo' a dollar!

Was it my what?

My bliss? What you...?

Oh! My bliss! My bliss!

Oh, you gotta 'scuse me, honey, cuz fo' a moment there, I thought we were talking 'bout somethin' else. Somethin' else entirely...

Heh, heh, heh.... yeah...yeah... my bliss.

Well, I tell you what... I may not have enjoyed it all at the time, but, and here's the thing 'bout me... I always manage a way to find myself... a little something fo' myself.

Know whatta mean?

Cuz, see... if you don't maintain
your equipment? If you don't take care of the tools you need in order to complete the deed.? Then you ain't gonna be in no shape to be of no help to nobody.

And in that case? Shoot. You... you better off just staying home, microwavin' yourself a nice bowl of oatmeal and watching some of that Netflix shit... mmm hmmm.

Cuz if you don't take care... and I am talking really, really good care... of what you got to work with?

Your assets, or whatever.

If you don't service yourself a little?

It's like that... that oxy-ma-callit machine thing.. on the airplane? Falls outta the ceiling when you 'bout to crash? Yeah, that thing. Well, they say you gotta put on your own mask first 'afore you can help anybody else... women, chil'run, old ladies... you gotta put on your own mask first. See?

Otherwise? What good are ya? Huh?

So, do yourself a favor... while you workin', doing whatever it is you doin' fo' a livin', earnin that almighty dollar?

You get some of that bliss stuff fo' yo'self while you pushing hash, scoopin' trash, grabbin' cash, before that plane crash... you get some bliss fo' yo'self.

Cuz one day? One day, that plane?

Oh... It gonna crash.

And when it do? You wanna be sittin' there suckin' on the oxy-macallit... thinking 'bout all the things you never got a chance to do?

Or do you wanna be sittin' there thinking of the things you did do?

Ex-specially them things you really shouldn't oughta be too proud of?

But, ya are, Blanche. Ya are!

Oh, yeah. You know what I'm talking about.

Them nasty things.

Yeah. You be sure 'afore that plane crash, you got yo'self a little something to think about. A little something... just fo' yourself.

Cuz that's the stuff you get to take with you when you crawl into bed each night... not them dollar bills. Hell, no... they just to pay the rent. But that bliss... that stuff?

You make damn sure you get some of that fo' yourself!

Oh!

I know that car!

I know that car! I know him!

Oh, honey... I gotta run! I gots bills to pay... bills to pay!

Talks to you laters. Buh-byeee...

--- ---

Have a lovely weekend.
And find your bliss.
Whatever you're doing.
Wherever you are.
