Madison Avenue certainly loved the idea of 'the little woman'.
They loved to tell her what she was good for, what to do to improve herself, and what was expected (and not) of her.
Let's take a brief look through the vintage files of advertising past, in a nostalgic re-visitation of an ideal whose time has long past.

You see, it was all predicated upon the needs of a man.
And their expectations...
Which seemed pretty clear.
They wanted a dishwasher...
...but also a trophy wife.
For centuries, hoards of women acted
as if nothing was wrong.
They simply surrendered their will.
They spent their time anticipating a man's needs.
Going to all sorts of lengths to achieve
the desired results.
It was enough to lead one to...
...drastic measures.
Well, if you can't beat them...
...join them!
Or just beat them.
Or...??
Whatever it takes.
As long as the status quo remains.
