The Old Savagery

The Old Savagery

"We see it all around us today - in political creeds, in the conduct of nations. A reaction from humanitarianism - from pity - from brotherly good-will. The creeds sound well sometimes - a wise regime - a beneficent government - but imposed by force, resting on a basis of cruelty and fear. Opening  the door, these apostles of violence are letting out the old savagery, the old delight in cruelty for its own sake! Man is an animal very delicately balanced. He has one prime necessity - to survive. To advance too quickly is as fatal as to lag behind. He must survive! He must, perhaps, retain some of the old savagery, but he must not - no, definitely he must not - deify it!"

- Agatha Christie

Don't Drop Bombs...

Don't Drop Bombs - Liza Minnelli

Don't Drop Bombs, written by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe is a song by Liza Minnelli, released in September of 1989 by Epic/ZEE 2 as the second single from her ninth album, Results (1989), produced by Pet Shop Boys and Julian Mendelsohn.

"Don't tell me about your lack of restrictions

Guilty records and previous convictions

Or I shall start playing rough (Baby!)

You're too corrupted, and totally destructive

When you've erupted, you're totally destructive

Don't drop bombs, baby, don't drop bombs

Just stay calm, baby, no more bombs

Don't drop bombs, baby, don't drop bombs

Just stay calm baby, no more bombs"

Wonderland Burlesque's Pick Of The Week: Nice To Each Other - Olivia Dean

Wonderland Burlesque's

Pick Of The Week:

Nice To Each Other - Olivia Dean

This week? I had a hard time finding something to sink my teeth into; there seemed to be something wrong with every song/video I hit upon. Ava Max? Madonna and Lady Gaga have a bone to pick with you, girl. And Martin Garrix and Lauv? You best check your fossil fuel imprint - private jets? Uh-huh, sorry, I can't. Yungblud? I've not seen a poser so obvious since the days of Johnny Cougar. And I simply cannot get behind any of this broody boy-next-door whining being passed off as pop ballads - sorry shoe-gazers... you are not that deep.

But then... in blows Olivia Dean sporting a very mid-70's singer/songwriter vibe with a sunny strummy bit of pop in the form of Nice To Each Other. I checked - and yes - she wrote it (with Max Hale), so the category fits. Something about the song makes me think of Maria Muldaur, Carole King, and early Carly Simon. I want to get lost in her sunshine bliss.

Her voice has such a lovely, easy tone, with just a bit of ache to it. And that C section brings to mind RES at her best. All in all, I find it refreshing and adore its laissez faire attitude. Any way the wind blows... And the theatre nerd vibe of the video seems the icing on this very sweet cake.

Bravo and well done... destined to become a classic.

I've done all the classic stuff, indeed!

Wonderland Burlesque's Pick Of The Week: Catch Feelings - Christine and the Queens and Cerrone

Wonderland Burlesque's

Pick Of The Week:

Catch Feelings - Christine and the Queens and Cerrone

This week? Set your body free!

Christine and the Queens teams up with Cerrone and will have us all heading for the dance floor by the first beat.

Christine and the Queens have been on my radar for years, but I've never heard them sound so accessible, with a song that would make Robyn proud. Clean, propulsive and surprisingly bright, they manage to snake into your personal bio-rhythm and bring the body alive. You'll be wondering what year it is, for this is a bit of disco supreme.

And yes! It's THAT Cerrone - the famed French disco legend who gave us Supernature all those years ago. It's a surprising combo which goes down better than a veggie burger with fries.

Bravo and well done... destined to become a classic.

Don't be afraid of your feelings for me, indeed!

Wonderland Burlesque's Pick Of The Week: Reverberatic - Alison Goldfrapp

Wonderland Burlesque's

Pick Of The Week:

Reverberatic - Alison Goldfrapp

This week? An all-time favorite diva pulls back the veil and reveals a classic side of her persona in the form of a marvelous new song.

Harking back to Goldfrapp's deliciously sensuous pop heyday, it's Alison Goldfrapp in fine form, with the pulsating Reverberotic, from her new solo disc Flux.

It's all breathy vocals and airy synths over a driven throb which surges and recedes and I couldn't be happier. So lose yourself in the luxury of this sensorial bit of pure pop gold and indulge. The pleasure is all hers.

Bravo and well done... destined to become a classic.

I want to bathe in you, indeed!

Wonderland Burlesque's Pick Of The Week: Bloom Baby Bloom - Wolf Alice

Wonderland Burlesque's

Pick Of The Week:

Bloom Baby Bloom - Wolf Alice

This week? It's spring... so Bloom Baby Bloom!

Wolf Alice, a British alternative rock band founded by singer Ellie Rowsell and guitarist Joff Oddie, scores big with this mesmerizing bit of pop grandeur.

It starts very Kate Bush, and evolves into a dramatic read Kate would be proud to call her own. Backed by a marvelous tapestry of tribal beats and instrumental flourishes, I adore every subtle moment they stray from the path; with this one you have no idea where you're going until you arrive. And speaking of arriving! I think this is Wolf Alice's moment.

Bravo and well done... destined to become a classic.

As The Diva Turns!

Kelly Clarkson

Spotlighting a recent diva turn...

I must say, you are in for quite the treat.

Kelly Clarkson, as I adore her... singing a song she cares about and giving it her all. I love this song. It features a great guitar solo and sparkling vocals. Old-school? Oh, hell yeah. It's a question that begs an answer... Where Have You Been.

All in all, a destined-to be-classic diva turn.

Where have you been, indeed!

--- ---

On a personal note: Where have I been?

I've been ill. Recovered and recovering. There were days when I simply curled up in a ball and wished the pain away and days when, at most, I could spend about 20 minutes on-line.

It's changed me. And I continue going through changes. And I'm not sure I can be here the way that I used to. For the summer, at least, there are other priorities. But never fear... I've written quite a bit in advance and those will auto-post. The only 'live' post will be on Wednesdays, because I still adore new music.

So... for a while? I'm going to be quiet. I wish you all well. I wish you all the best. This all started during Covid and our little group of bloggers - we kept each other company - it was the best company I could have asked for. I'll be back. Probably in late fall...? Who knows. Take good care of yourselves. My heart to you.

As The Diva Turns!

Lorde, Jessie, and Elley

Spotlighting some recent diva turns...

I must say, you are in for quite the treat.

Up first?  The return of Lorde, tubthumping in fine style, forthright and cryptic as always. She has waken from a dream, an epic romance and demands to know What Was That.

Then, my favorite musical chameleon, bringing a quiet fire as only she can to the marvelous urban soundscape and heartache of No Secrets. This is perfection.

And finally, coming to a dance floor near you,  the throbbing feverish scatter beats of Elley Duhé's delish dish, Body Talk. The remix masters are already knocking at the door!

All in all, a trio of destined-to be-classic diva turns.

Am I addicted to the honey, indeed!

Rather appropriately titled, it's Dream Machine by a perfect cushy marriage of dance, night life and light. Yes, funky Purple Disco Machine has hooked up with the ethereal beauty Alison Goldfrapp to create a bit of dance floor fun. Think of it as a little something to make your nights a bit more magical.

Wonderland Burlesque's

As The Diva Turns!

Heidi, Marina, and OK GO

Spotlighting some recent diva turns...

I must say, you are in for quite the treat.

Up first?  Well, I like her taste in samples (Situation - Yazoo), and I like her taste in men (see video). So, yeah I like-like this song and I think Heidi makes the most of what she's got to work with - which is the very definition of a diva. The song is Body Language, and a tasty slice of pop it is!

Then, whipping about like Beethoven in a semi-classic Ibiza mood, it's the ever-creative Marina, reading from the good book of how to deal with a 'please-no-more' ex, with the pulsating Cuntissimo.

And finally, channeling a bit of Beatlesque charm, it's those visual wizards known as OK GO, with their latest mind-blowing video, simply Love.

Spotlighting some recent diva turns...

I must say, you are in for quite the treat.

Up first?  Channeling some major 1950's girl group vibe, its the always-entertaining, amazingly prolific Miley Cyrus with the sweetly euphoric, misty-eyed End of the World.

Then, ever full of surprises, it's everyone's favorite musical nerd Ed Sheeran going full Ibiza with a shuffle beat that would make Michael Jackson proud, on the irresistibly danceable Azizam.

And finally, soaring over the dance floor with a bit of old-school house drama, its dance wizard Alesso more than ably assisted by Becky Hill in true diva mode on the ethereally propulsive Surrender.

All in all, a trio of destined-to be-classic diva turns.

Spotlighting some recent diva turns.

I must say, you are in for quite the treat.

Up first?  In a subdued mood, and channeling a bit of classic Donna Lewis, it's the normally bombastic Ariana Grande, with the pure pop confection of her latest, Twilight Zone.

Then, with a total return to her original form, it's the liberated Kesha leaning hard on the country button with some help from T-Pain on the joyous group sing-along, Yippy-Ki-Yay.

And finally, serving up a classic slice of classic disco, its the poshest UK diva, the lovely Sophie Ellis-Bextor, with the infectiously chic Relentless Love.

Spotlighting some recent diva turns.

I must say, you are in for quite the treat.

Up first?  With a voice which occasionally brings to mind Kate Bush in her heyday, it's the imaginative Marina, weaving the pulsating tale of a love that can't be denied in the haunting, fanciful Cupid's Girl.

Then, with moves as smooth as his butt cheeks, it's our current favorite gay squeeze, David Archuleta, in the delightfully-ringing, oh-so sweetly singing, joyous Crème Brulée.

And finally, delivering a message for the times, it's the idiosyncratic MØ, with the urgently insistent, whip smart reminder to Keep Møving.

 As The Diva Turns!
Tom, Lil Nas X, & Frankie

Spotlighting some recent diva turns.

And it's a total sausage fest, my dears.

I must say, you are in for quite the treat.

Up first? Borrowing a bit from The Weeknd, it's scruffy/hunky Tom Grennan, serving up a dose of social commentary with a swagger dealing with an issue which needs to be addressed, on the funky lite bop of Boys Don't Cry.

Then, taking us on a journey through his mind and his times, it's the undeniably-talented ever-evolving  Lil Nas X, with the sumptuously clever, turn-on-a-dime confessional, Dreamboy.

And finally, Frankie Grande (yes, that Grande) living his best life? I dunno. The vid has to be seen to be believed. As for the song? Well, mix some standard boy band music and peel off a layer of that old chestnut Mr. Saxobeat, and I guess you've got yourself a reason to justify all that eyeliner, hair gel and eyeshadow. Eh. It's all fun.

Up first?  A bit of text book Ibiza with a chorus you're sure to crave, rave it up with Dust from Alan Walker and Robin Packalen.

Then, bringing his distinctive sound to the club with a true diva in tow, it's that titanium pairing of David Guetta and Sia with the sonically-sublime throb of Beautiful People.

And finally, with more cooks in the kitchen than a five star restaurant and serving up something just as tasty, we have Meduza, Inellea, Genesi featuring Nu-La with the sensuously churning club-thumper Edge Of The World.
