False Kisses

(1921)

Fishing partners Paul Whalen and Jim Payne are rivals for the affections of Jennie Blake, a schoolteacher from the city who came to their small town of Rocky Point to teach school. After Jim is beaten in a fight by Paul, Jennie marries Paul and Jim leaves town. Five years later he returns to town as coastal inspector.  He learns that Jennie and Paul are still married but that Paul is out of work. Jim then hires Jim as a lighthouse keeper, but sends the couple to a remote, lonely, depressing lighthouse. Complications ensue.

Based on the play Ropes, this American silent drama was directed by Paul Scardon and stars Miss DuPont, Pat O'Malley, and Lloyd Whitlock.

Miss DuPont was an American film actress and fashion designer. She is perhaps best known for her roles in Foolish Wives (1922) and for a supporting role in the Clara Bow vehicle Mantrap (1926). She appeared as a wealthy and naïve American woman seduced by Erich von Stroheim's odious count in Foolish Wives (1922). Although Stroheim is credited with discovering her, she had already made several films beginning in 1919 with The Day She Paid. Her film career ended in 1927.

Cheap Kisses

(1924)

When Henry Dillingham suddenly becomes unexpectently wealthy, his son, Donald Dillingham, refuses to join his family in their new jazz age social life. Donald then garners even greater disapproval by marrying chorus girl Ardell Kendall. Learning that famous sculptor Gustaf Borgstrom wishes to use Ardell as model, the Dillinghams have a change of heart and suddenly welcome Donald and Ardell to their estate. Donald quickly surrenders to both the jazzy pleasures available and the attentions of Maybelle Wescott, though Ardell remains aloof to all. In order to pay Maybelle to leave Donald alone, Ardell blackmails Henry Dillingham with exposure of his infatuation with a chorus girl. However, when the adventuress breaks her agreement to leave Donald alone, Ardell reveals the bargain to Donald, who angrily storms off. Ardell, with heavy heart, returns to the couple's honeymoon cottage and finds a remorseful Donald waiting for her.

This American silent drama was directed by John Ince and Cullen Tate and stars Jean Hersholt, Louise Dresser, Bessie Eyton, Cullen Landis and Lillian Rich.

This film is considered lost.

It's all love and laughter in this boxing ring comedy featuring the antics of Slim Summerville.

Bewitching Kisses 

(1937)

AKA: Besos brujos, Beijos Comprados

A young, beautiful singer leaves Buenos Aires after her fiancée supposedly betrays her with another girl. In her new job as a singer in a small town, a rancher falls in love with her "bewitching kisses". Smitten, he abducts her, taking her to his cabin in the Jungle. Meanwhile, her boyfriend hasn't gotten over losing her and begins a search for his lost love.

Based on a story by Enrique García Velloso, this Argentine romantic musical drama was directed and written by José A. Ferreyra and stars Libertad Lamarque and Floren Delbene.

This musical is part of the Golden Age of Argentine cinema. Beginning in the 1930's and continuing into the 1950's, this golden age marks a time during which national film production underwent a process of industrialization and standardization that involved the emergence of mass production, the establishment of the studio, genre and star systems, and the adoption of the institutional mode of representation (MRI) that was mainly (though not exclusively) spread by Hollywood, By adopting these standards, Argentine cinema quickly became one of the most popular film industries across Latin America and the Spanish-speaking world.

A Thousand Little Kisses 

(1981)

AKA: אלף נשיקות קטנות, Elef Nishikot K'tano

In contemporary Tel Aviv, a mother and daughter confront each other after the death of the father/husband and discover that he had a secret affair. The daughter is drawn irresistibly to the 'other' woman's son and finds herself torn between feelings of loyalty to her mother and her distaste for the father's passionate past, while the mother is tormented by her husband's past betrayal and her own current jealousy. Both women struggle to settle old debts as they each experience passion and pain, but grow to learn a sense of independence.

This Israeli drama was written and directed by Mira Recanati and stars Dina Doran and Rivka Neuman.

 

The film was submitted as the Israeli entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 54th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee. It was also screened in the Un Certain Regard section of the 1981 Cannes Film Festival.
