Acquired Tastes XLIII Gay Pulp Fiction, Part 121: Adonis Classics, Part 5 of 25

Acquired Tastes XLIII
Gay Pulp Fiction, Part 121:
Adonis Classics, Part 5 of 25

Greenleaf Classic Books, the publishers of  the Adonis Classics imprint, began in 1959 and continued until 1971, when management lost focus on the business as the government's prosecution for obscenity became a major concern.

By 1974,a new management team and staff were in place, operating out of an office at 7523 Raytheon Road in San Diego and production ceased on all existing imprints. In an attempt to break into mainstream markets, two new imprints were started which used cover art and titles that were not provocative. These efforts failed.

The year 1975 marks the end of  Greenleaf Classics' Vintage period. It is at this time, with the loosening of censorship laws, that the Adonis Classics imprint began production. It marks the end of Greenleaf Classic's Classic Age (1959-1975.)

Adonis Classics would release a total of 252 titles during it's lifespan.

The first twenty covers feature white backgrounds (with one exception) and colored drawings or black and white pencil illustrations. After the first two titles, a particular type-face was established, with the title appearing above the illustration. The distinctive Adonis Classics symbol was established with either the seventh or eighth title in the series.

After the first twenty titles, the imprint switched to their iconic red covers (though sometimes pink,) featuring a black and white illustration framed in a black circle which has an arrow attached - a universal sign designating something as 'male.' The book's title at the top of the cover is encased in a white circle with an arrow (the symbol for male.)

Today, we fared a bit better than last week, with eight out of ten covers found!

Ranch House Stud
Author: Harlon Bond
AC 141
(Cover Not Found)

I have always found ranch houses to be the most boring design scheme for a home.

However, this title clearly refers to the type with cowboys and ranch hands... which means I am definitely on board. No one wears a pair of jeans quite like a cute cowboy - those suckers are painted on. Add to that a nice hat and a pair of boots? You've got yourself a fetish in the making.

Ah, there's something about being on the open range. Of course Brokeback Mountain raised all sorts of appreciation for the lifestyle, though I do believe there was already a built-in audience for that sort of thing.

What the hell is happening in that illustration. It looks like the Jolly Green Giant or Hulk just grab a young one by the strap of his jock and swung him upside down. Not that there aren't advantages to that position. You 69 your way, I'll 69 mine!

I guess this used to actually happen in certain adult movie theatres in cities like New York. In fact, Man's Country in Chicago had such a theatre and tales of shows past are still being told to this day. That iconic bathhouse had seen better days by the time I experienced it, but that stage in the middle of the theatre was still there. Of course, now, it has gone the way of the wrecking ball.

Still... those stories live on.

Water Sports Stud
Author: F.W. Love
AC144

Huh, another young one hijacked by his own jock straps. I am sensing a theme!

I'm not opposed to water sports, having been on both the giving and receiving end in my day. In fact, I am still acquainted with a hot stud at the prairie I call Mr. Fister who every once in a great while is in a giving mood.

For me? It's like something you order off the menu as a side dish once in a blue moon. A steady diet of such would pretty much ruin its unique qualities for moi.

Dirt Road Cousins
Author: Thad Fargo
AC 145

This type of outdoor scene certainly intrigues me. Something tells me that whatever those two in the water are staring at, it's not a tree branch.

I must confess, I had lots of fantasies about my older male cousins, however... they always seemed to cut me out of the inner circle. It could be that they sensed my difference. I'm pretty sure they were all fooling around with one another... I simply wasn't invited to the party.

Locker room fantasies remain just that for me these days. I haven't been in a proper gym's locker room since the day Covid-19 sent all employees at my workplace home for the duration.

Still, I do adore a nice pictorial and this one has all the elements of a true winner. I mean, it doesn't take a genius to know what's going to be coming out of blondie's jock pouch, now does it?

AC 147

So F.W. Love is shaping up to be quite the contributor for this imprint.

Author Frederick W. LaCava used F.W. Love as a pseudonym and also wrote under the names John Ironstone and Martin Moore, for imprints such as The Blueboy Library and Greenleaf Classics.

He is the author of, I Am Proud To Be Gay, Now I Want To Be Free, a call to activism disguised as gay pulp fiction.

Stud Master

(Cover Not Found)

Now, I love me good dom, but I think my days of submitting to another and doing whatever they tell me has gone the way of the Blackberry and pagers. I still see folks advertising for house slaves and just sort of giggle. It's a lovely fantasy... but a little unrealistic, don't you think? I mean, we all have to pay bills and contribute to our 401K's, my dears.

Author: F.W. Love
AC 149

Oh, my... this is a two for one deal. Well, count me out. The thought of being physically abused by two brothers? Not my cup of tea. Though I'm sure fans of the genre are in store for quite a literary treat. Yet another one from the prolific pen of Frederick W. LaCava!

Author: Adam Jennings
AC 150

Hmm. Something tells me it wasn't blondie's thumb sticking out that caught that highway patrol man's eye! Those jeans appear to be at their breaking point.

Well, that's something you no longer see... a lawman willing to help out a citizen in need!

Next week: another ten scintillating Adonis Classics.

Until then...

Wonderland Burlesque's Let's All Go To The Movies: Women Behind Bars Part II: Big, Betrayed, Convicted and Condemned

Wonderland Burlesque's
Let's All Go To The Movies
Women Behind Bars Part II
Big, Betrayed, Convicted and Condemned

This week's Let's All Go To The Movies is all about women who are big, betrayed convicted and condemned. A mixture of film classics starring some of the loveliest ladies to light up the silver screen during the golden age of Hollywood, and drive-in move fare featuring some of our favorite blaxploitation and exploitation movie heroines, these films both preached morality and titillated the viewers.

Now let's experience the clank and terror of metal bars, and learn a bit more about these scandalous movies and their big name stars..

--- ---

Ladies Of The Big House
(1931)

(Newlywed Kathleen Storm, as played by Sylvia Sidney, finds herself  and her husband, who has been sentenced to the death penalty, framed by her criminal ex-boyfriend. In prison she meets an ex-girlfriend of the man who framed her and her husband who eventually agrees to help clear the couple's names.)

(Sylvia Sydney remains one of my all-time favorite actresses. She was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress for her work in Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams, but you may remember her best as the chain-smoking receptionist in hell from the film Beetlejuice.)

(This was an advertisement in Film Daily,)

(Gene Raymond made a career appearing in light musicals and films with the likes of Loretta Young, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, and Ann Sothern. He also wrote a number of songs, one of which, Will You?, he sang on screen to Sothern, while others were sung on screen by his real life wife, the celebrated Jeanette McDonald.)

--- ---

Condemned Women
(1938)

(Linda Wilson, played by Sally Eilers, doesn't give a damn about life until she falls in love with Dr. Phillip, the prison psychiatrist. However, her turnabout is short-lived when she's asked to break up with the doctor, as her presence in his life stands in the way of his career.)

(Eilers was one of Mack Sennet's 'flaming youth' comedians, along with school chum Carole Lombard. She was a vivacious and much beloved presence in 1930's era Hollywood.)

(Anne Shirley is another favorite actress of mine. A true beauty, she appeared in a number of film noirs and was nominated as Best Supporting Actress for her work in the classic, Stella Dallas. She began her career as a popular child actress under the name Dawn O'Day.)

--- ---

Convicted Woman
(1940)
AKA: Dames/Daughters Of Today
"Caged women! What would they do if they were turned loose for a day?"
"Would they use their fleeting freedom for home and dear ones... for love... for crime?"

(Rochelle Hudson played both Shirley Temple's older sister in Curly Top, Claudette Colbert's adult daughter in Imitation Of Life, and James Dean's mother in Rebel Without A Cause. She also appeared in films opposite both  W.C. Fields and Mae West.)

"Women weep... but not for their sins... as tear gas quells female prison riots!"

(This film also includes 24 year-old Glenn Ford as reporter Jim Brent)

--- ---

Girls Of The Big House
(1945)

(This drama stars Lynne Roberts who appeared opposite the likes of Roy Rogers, Sonje Henie, Linda Darnell, Cesar Romero, Jane Withers, Lloyd Bridges, Loretta Young, Agnes Moorehead, and Gene Autry in 64 films.)

--- ---

The Ship Of Condemned Women
(1953)
"Adventure and excitement you will long remember!"
"The fury of 100 love -starved women!
"Caged for the sins of their past... their break for freedom climaxed by an orgy of wanton lust and revenge!"
"The screen explodes violently with the unleashed emotions of suppressed desires."
"A story so daring they said it could never be filmed."

(An Italian historical adventure-melodrama concerning a ship filled with imprisoned women being transported to a penal colony. French actress Kierma had made a name for herself playing a native girl in Outcasts Of The Island, while May Britt appeared in a number of films from 1953 until 1960, when she retired from film to take on the real life role of Mrs. Sammy Davis, Jr.)

(Reportedly, both John and Robert Kennedy told Frank Sinatra to tell Sammy not to get married before the 1960 Presidential Election, as interracial marriage was still illegal and neither Kennedy wanted a scandal. Sammy duly waited and then tied the knot five days after the election.)

(After making a slew of movies in Italy, Britt was imported to Hollywood where she appeared opposite the likes of Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, Robert Wagner, Robert Mitchum, and Peter Falk. She also starred in a universally-panned remake of the Marlene Dietrich classic, The Blue Angel.)

--- ---

Betrayed Women
(1955)
"Women in solitary!"
"What happens behind the barrack walls of the female Devil's Island?"
"The girls who take the rap for the big shots of crime!"

(This British film stars B-movie queen, Beverly Michaels. Michaels made a career out of playing 'bad girl' types. In an interview she once said, "One of the penalties... is that some people, especially the wolf type, can't forget it was just a movie. I get my share of wisecracks. But I ignore them. You have to. If you're going to play roles like I have, you have to expect to be a target for such remarks. I just pretend I don't hear them. If you're going to be supersensitive, you had better get out of the business. I always have hope that my next picture will make me a decent woman." She was married to an executive at MGM and then  a director who cast her as the lead in her best remembered film, 1954's film noir Wicked Women. In the 1980's, when vintage bad girls like Diana Dors and Mamie Van Doren experienced renewed popularity, Michaels resisted all offers and attempts made to cash in on her former notoriety, preferring her privacy, instead.)

--- ---

 Big Doll House
(1971)
"Their bodies were caged, but not their desires."
"They would do anything for a man - or to him."

(Another with Pam Grier and Roberta Collins, who appeared together in Caged Women/Black Mama White Mama that same year. Both films were shot in the Philippines at the same time, using the same buildings and sets.)

"Soft young girls behind hard prison bars... they'd do anything for a man or to him!"
"Boiling passions confined behind concrete walls."
"Naked lust that builds to a climax of death."

--- ---

The Big Bust-Out
(1972)
AKA: The Crucified Girls of San Ramon
"Soft skin bursting through hard prison walls!"
"Locked in a cage of wild desire."
"The chain their bodies but not their lust!"

(Renamed The Big Bust-Out in 1973 when B-movie king Roger Corman bought the US film rights. He trimmed 20 minutes off the film, later commenting that it wasn't a very good film but he still managed to make some money off of it.)

(Featuring blaxploitation star, Venetta McGee. McGee would star opposite Clint Eastwood in The Eiger Sanction among many other films.)

--- ---

The Big Bird Cage
(1972)
"Lashed to a terrible machine that maims tender young bodies and cripples innocent young minds."
"Men who are only half men and women who are more than all woman."

(This is the third of four prison films starring exploitation film queen Pam Grier. It also features  blaxploitation star Carol Speed and Anita Ford, most famous for her time, from 1972 to 1976, as a model on The Price Is Right and starring opposite Burt Reynolds in The Longest Yard.  )

--- ---

Convict Women
AKA: Thunder County
(1974)
To stay alive they have to kill..."

(Four women escape from prison only to be hunted in the swamp by a lecherous redneck.)

(Starring Mickey Rooney and Ted Cassidy, who is best remembered as Lurch in the television version of The Addams Family.)

Weekend Onesie: STFU, Uptonking

Weekend Onesie: STFU, Uptonking

The question posed was... "Do you want your life?"

My response was: "Don't you threaten me."

And his reply was: "Do you want your life?"

As he sped away, I was physically shaking and wondering...

When did it come to this?

Just over two years ago, when the Covid-19 pandemic began to be taken seriously and I began to work from home, I took the opportunity to enrich not only my life, but that of my 13 year-old dog, Hercules, by taking him on a daily walk before heading over to The Boyfriend's house to work out and check on the cats.

It was a win/win. Hercules got some much needed stimulation and exercise, while I got to check out the neighborhood and get some fresh air.

At the same time, our radical city council decided that they had heard enough complaints from their constituents and that it was time to do something about all the cars speeding through residential neighborhoods, endangering the lives of pedestrians and children playing.

They lowered the speed limit to 20 mph.

Signs began to appear everywhere: '20 Is Plenty.'

It seems the members of the Minneapolis City Council believed that the way to get people who were driving 40 and 45 miles an hour through residential streets where the speed limit was posted at 30 was to lower that speed limit to 20.

But you know what happened instead?

People got pissed off. And now, instead of going a mere 10 miles an hour over the speed limit, they decided to go 30 miles an hour over the speed limit. It was their way of saying, 'you're not going to tell me what to do.'

Now, about this same time, George Floyd was killed over in South Minneapolis. The council acted swiftly: 'Defund The Police' became their new battle cry. All the resulting turmoil led to a mass exodus from the MPD. Some retired early. Some simple walked off the job. Suddenly, we have 300 plus less officers patrolling our neighborhoods.

This meant we now had new laws, but no one to enforce them.

So? No police presence. Check. Angry people who do not give a fuck. Check.

Growing up, I was taught, if you see something - say something - do something. So, when I see people racing down the street while walking my dog, I yell at them, "Slow down!"

Most ignore it. And for the longest time, that is the way things remained.

But I must have gotten a taste for playing neighborhood traffic monitor, for, before I knew it, if I saw speeder, and I was driving (the speed limit, because, it turns out I like driving 20 mph,) I'd give my horn a little tap. And if they ran a stop sign? Why, I'd lay on that horn a little harder.

Sometimes I'd get a response. Words I don't like to type, but for the sake of this post, I will.

Hercules and I pass through two crosswalks where there are stop signs posted. I can't tell you the number of times a car would be approaching as Herc and I would be stepping into the street, only for me to have to rapidly yank Hercules, who typically walks a few feet ahead of me, back to the curb because  - turns out that car was not interested in doing the right thing.

I began to say something to those people as well. Only, I never yelled it, I would simply speak it. "You had a stop sign."

About three weeks ago, it was a nice day, a man, with his car windows rolled down, decides not to stop, and I yank Hercules back to the curb. He turns to the left and as he does, I say, in a normal speaking voice, "You had a stop sign."

He stops.

"What did you say?"

I repeat what I had just said.

"I did. I did stop."

"No. No, you didn't. You almost hit my dog."

"Fuck you."

"Just stop at the stop sign next time, okay."

"You want your life?"

And time stands still.

This is about stopping at a stop sign. That seems like a bit of an over reaction. I decide, 'this is ridiculous.'

"Don't you threaten me."

He begins to speed away, and yells, again... "Do you want your life?"

I immediately think of the baseball coach who lost his life in a road rage a year ago because he tapped on his horn when an SUV began to drift into his lane. The driver of that SUV pulled out a gun and killed the man, point blank. The driver of the SUV was just convicted of first degree murder and is awaiting sentencing.

When I tell The Ex and my mother about the incident, their reactions do not surprise me.

"You have to keep your mouth shut!"

My work wife agrees.

And so, I try.

But there I am at a neighborhood intersection. My direction has no stop signs, but those that cross it from the other way do. I am halfway in the intersection and a couple step off the curb to cross in front of me, so I wait. I don't inch forward, that's rude. I wait. A car approaches to my right. They have a stop sign. He pauses, sort of, but then moves to continue. The people are in the middle of the walkway. I am in the middle of the intersection. I tap my horn and indicate that I am waiting. He looks at me quizzically. "You have a stop sign," I say.

The couple has reached the other side and I move through the intersection.

The car that I honked my horn at follows me. I pull over and he sidles up to me. He is super angry. Calling me every name in the book. I raise my palms to the sky, as if to say, 'what is the big deal?'

He drives away.

Two days later, I am in my car, in front of The Boyfriend's house, just pulling away from the curve. His house is only three houses down from the corner. This same vehicle whips around that corner, onto the street I'm driving on. As he passes, I say, out my open car window, "Slow down!"

I drive to the corner. Come to a full stop. Make a right turn, travel the length of the block and come to another stop sign. I come to a full stop. I turn right, heading for home. Here, barreling toward me, is that same little white car. I'm going about 18 mph when he pulls up beside me and screams, "fuck you, you fucking bitch..."

I don't stop. As I drive past him I say, "Just slow down."

Fortunately, he doesn't do an illegal U-turn and follow me.

As I write this, I realize, any one of these scenarios could have ended very badly... for me. For my loved ones.

So, I am going to take the advice I have been given.

I am going to STFU.

Because I realized: I am not the neighborhood traffic monitor. And people who have so little regard for the rules and the safety of others, have no regard for my life. To them? My life means nothing.

So?

Do I want my life?

Yes.

Yes, I would like to keep my life, thank you very much.

Lost Boys: Vintage Images of Jerry Suter

Lost Boys: Vintage Images of Jerry Suter

Blonde and blue-eyed Jerry Suter seemed to epitomize the image of California's golden surfer boy - an innocent and carefree archetype celebrated during the golden age of gay porn.

However, in Suter's case, something much darker lay beneath the surface... something Bob Mizer, founder of and chief photographer for the Athletic Model Guild (AMG) and Old Reliables' David Hurles would get to experience firsthand.

Suter's story? There's not a lot to tell, because facts are few. But it is rather brow-raising, which is why I've decided to share it with you, today.

Jerry Suter
AKA: Jerry Sutter
Hair: Blonde
Eyes: Blue
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 160"

Years Active: 1980 - 1987
Films: 4
Studios: AMG, Old Reliable

As gay porn stars go, Jerry Suter is little more than a footnote. His photographic and cinematic history doesn't amount to all that much. That said... he certainly did make an impact and has a fanbase to this day. He's also one of those people who are as infamous as they are famous.

In 1981, Suter became a model for Bob Mizer's Athletic Model Guild. As part of Mizer's stable of models, he went on to pose for other photographers, including Old Reliable's David Hurles

Mizer (pictured left) is an interesting and influential figure in the history of gay porn. Way back in 1942, he began his photographer career as an apprentice for silent film star Frederic Kovert, who owned and operated a 'physique' studio in Hollywood called Kovert of Hollywood.

Kovert (pictured right), a rather interesting bit of Hollywood lore, is famous for appearing in drag in a number of early silent film comedies as well as appearing in and designing the costumes for the 1925 version of The Wizard Of Oz.

In December of 1945, Mizer founded the Athletic Model Guild, or, as it is more commonly referred to, AMG. From 1951 to 1990, he published the photos he would take of his models in his own magazine, Physique Pictorial - which has been described as "a quarterly publication (which) exemplified the use of bodybuilding culture and classical art figure posing, as a cover for homoerotic male images, (in order) to evade charges of obscenity" - out of a studio near downtown Los Angeles. The studio was housed "in his large family home, a compound with multiple buildings and courtyards that eventually included sets used to depict diverse locales and allowed for both still and moving pictures to be shot."

Almost immediately, Mizer became a target for law enforcement. In 1945, the Post Master General raided his place of residence. Although 'dirty' pictures were discovered, Mizer was not charged with a crime. He was less fortunate the next time the law came to visit. In 1947, Mizer was arrested after a man reported that he'd purchased nude photographs from him - not for the selling of the photos - but because one of the models, James Maynor, was only seventeen at the time Mizer photographed him. This time, Mizer was sentenced to nine months, serving only six, at a prison farm in Saugus, CA. But the harassment didn't end there...

Due to Mizer's habit of keeping meticulous records regarding the physical attributes and demeanor of his models - information that he would then share with other photographers when loaning out one of his models - he was arrested and charged with running a prostitution ring. Oddly enough, he was found guilty and was incarcerated for a period of time in 1968.

Still, that did not deter Mizer. He continued to publish until 1990. He passed away on May 19, 1992, at the age of 70.

The influence of Mizer's photography, which resulted in "a collection that includes nearly two million different images and thousands of films and videotapes" cannot be underestimated. He photographed over ten thousand men, including the first photos of actors Tab Hunter, Ed Fury, Glenn Corbett, and Joe Dallesandro. Both David Hockney and Robert Mapplethorpe cited his work as a source of inspiration. A number of books have been published featuring his photos, one of which inspired the 1999 docudrama, Beefcake.

By 1986, Suter had become a popular cover boy. He was featured on the cover of In Touch magazine's October, 1986 Halloween issue with an accompanying photo spread.

He would also appear on the cover of one of Physique Pictorial's issues (Physique Pictorial vol. 40, June 1987.)

Suter was also at home in front of a motion picture camera. He did at least four 'wrestling' films for AMG, one featuring Scott Ruffi, one with Bill Smith, one with David Televito one with Bill Murphy. All of these short films are now available for home viewing on the various volumes of AMG's DVD collection.

Roughhousing leading to spanking was something frequently featured in Mizer's films, and in all four of Suter's short films, he ended up being the one on the receiving end.

It was during one of these sessions that Suter's temper was caught on camera, in full display. As one viewer recalls: "I remember seeing this video years ago, and Jerry going ballistic when a few drops of Bill (Smith's) jizz landed on him while they were fapping off. I think that Jerry actually was pretty insecure about his feelings, and tried to compensate by being arrogant and obnoxious."

Another remembers: "An angry-looking Jerry Suter feel(ing) the firm hand of Bill Smith in... their spanking/wrestling match at AMG, circa 1986. I would have loved to be on set to see this one live. Arrogant punk Jerry was not a happy camper getting whipped and slapped by Mr. Bill. At the end of the match both guys rubbed one out on the mats. Bill reached climax first and a few drops of his man cream landed on Jerry's leg. Jerry went ballistic! It was an early sign that this guy could go from cool and calm to outrage maniac in an instant."

Suter's surly personality would catch the attention of photographer David Hurles, who would hire Suter for a photoshoot at his apartment.

Dealing with actors/models with rough edges was nothing new for Hurles or Mizer. In Mizer's case, according to the Mizer Foundation website: "Some of those stars were 'trade'. Some were AWOL. Some were petty criminals. Occasionally, in return for his generosity, Bob was robbed or assaulted and his property damaged. Bob listed those offenses and many others in Physique Pictorial. Even the subjective character symbols next to certain models’ photos included 'physically dangerous', 'petty thief' and 'criminally inclined."

However, Hurles got more than he bargained for with Suter. In 1988, "He and another criminal robbed the proprietor of Old Reliable (Hurles) at gunpoint, tied him up, abused him and carried off his equipment."

Suter would then go on a crime spree in Nevada, which included the kidnapping an elderly couple whom he tortured "nearly to death because he believed that were hiding a huge sum of cash in their house." Suter was quickly apprehended.

He ended up serving 25 years of a 27 year sentence in a prison in Nevada.

Whatever happened to Suter after that? No one seems to know.

Still, his images, and now his films, live on.

--- ---

I knew nothing of Suter. I kept seeing his photos associated with AMG and something about the pics for his In Touch spread intrigued me. Most likely due to the fact that he seems of a different era, more early 1981 than 1986 in that red net shirt.

I must say, those photos never hinted at the evil lying within. From outward appearances, he seemed to embody the image of a California golden boy.

Well, as longtime readers of these Lost Boys posts know all too well... looks can be deceiving.

--- ---

That's all for now. Until next time...

Thanks for reading.
