'Hypnotic' by Zella Day
Pinetop,
Arizona’s own Zella Day has been creating quite a buzz, ever since her stripped
down version of the White Stripes’ ‘Seven Nation Army’ first appeared on-line.
The haunting
singer/songwriter’s latest, ‘Hypnotic’, was released at the end of 2014. While
the Middle Eastern flavored fill figure feels like a bit of a cliché, there are
still plenty of pop smarts to be found.
For some reason, the single strikes me as being a bit out-of-time,
reminding me of the type of pop that Jennifer Paige’s ‘Crush’ represents.
Still,
given the popularity of the likes of Lana Del Rey (to whom she is most
frequently compared to) and Tove Lo (a more apt comparison), I have no doubt
that Ms. Day, once paired with the right song and producer, will break through
in a big way.
That said, 'Hypnotic' serves as a tasty introduction.
