Sunday Diva/Three From The Hip: The Pointer Sisters

Sunday Divas/Three From The Hip:
The Pointer Sisters

In my own personal big gay church, there is a wing dedicated to what can only be described as... The Sisterhood. No matter their musical genre of choice, these ladies came together as a unit, joined arms and mesmerized the world. Their harmonies inspired unity while creating an energy which was absolutely infectious. Hit after hit, they earned their place in music history, sharing their unique vocal stylings.

One such group?

The Pointer Sisters.

These sisters were doing it for themselves all along.

The started as four.

They had hits, they were regulars on variety shows, and even conquered Nashville. Yes, they snagged a Country Top 40 Hit, long before B-Bouncy. And won a Grammy for it, too.

And then went on to even bigger success as a trio.

The were an American jukebox.

In all? Sixteen Top 40 hits!

To this day, you cannot listen to adult contemporary radio without hearing one of their songs.

The gospel according to them?

Well, here are three from the hip, dropping from their lips.

The topic? How It Happened.

"It was the perfect way for us to dress, because it fit the type of music we were singing, and above all, it was cheap," - June Pointer

"We just shook everything we could shake." - Ruth Pointer

"When we first performed at the Grand Ole Opry, the audiences loved us, but at the hotel where there was a party for us, the staff assumed we were the hired help and directed us toward the back door." - Anita Pointer

Yes, We Can Can - The Pointer Sisters

Slow Hand - The Pointer Sisters

Automatic - The Pointer Sisters

And one last parting shot.

"The Pointer Sisters never would have happened had it not been for Bonnie." – Bonnie Pointer
