Acquired Tastes XLIII: Gay Pulp Fiction, Part 130 - Adonis Classics, Part 14 of 25

Acquired Tastes XLIII
Gay Pulp Fiction, Part 130
Adonis Classics, Part 14 of 25

Greenleaf Classic Books, the publishers of  the Adonis Classics imprint, began in 1959 and continued until 1971, when management lost focus on the business as the government's prosecution for obscenity became a major concern.

By 1974,a new management team and staff were in place, operating out of an office at 7523 Raytheon Road in San Diego and production ceased on all existing imprints. In an attempt to break into mainstream markets, two new imprints were started which used cover art and titles that were not provocative. These efforts failed.

The year 1975 marks the end of  Greenleaf Classics' Vintage period. It is at this time, with the loosening of censorship laws, that the Adonis Classics imprint began production. It marks the end of Greenleaf Classic's Classic Age (1959-1975.)

Adonis Classics would release a total of 252 titles during it's lifespan.

The first twenty covers feature white backgrounds (with one exception) and colored drawings or black and white pencil illustrations. After the first two titles, a particular type-face was established, with the title appearing above the illustration. The distinctive Adonis Classics symbol was established with either the seventh or eighth title in the series.

After the first twenty titles, the imprint switched to their iconic red covers (though sometimes pink,) featuring a black and white illustration framed in a black circle which has an arrow attached - a universal sign designating something as 'male.' The book's title at the top of the cover is encased in a white circle with an arrow (the symbol for male.)

This week, I managed to find 9 out of 10 covers!

The Dream Job
Author: Mark Hoffman
AC 231
(Cover Not Found)

Working a glory hole? Backroom sex attendant? Sex gimp? Locker room jockstrap depository? Launderer at a frat house? Athletic cup inspector for the NFL? Just a few of my dream jobs.

The other position I would like? The job Maggie Gyllenhaal has in the 2002 film Secretary. Watch it.

Beach Boy Buddies
Author: F.W. Love
AC 232

Check out those floatation devices! If I should find myself in distress, I see one lifeline I'm grabbing hold of. So much fun, skinny dipping with a buddy. Another great illustration and it looks like we're up to August of 1980.

The Gay Cowboys
Author: Mark Hoffman
AC 233

That's a cute pair of hombres looking to welcome you to the ranch... and their pants! I once read that all chaps are assless... it would be fun to find out if that was true.

Available as a pdf or e-book at Hommi Publishing.

Call Boy Brothers
Author: Lambert Wilhelm
AC 234

Oh, dear... it looks like one of the brothers answered the wrong call! I wonder if the other comes to his rescue. That appears to be one assignment I would never accept. The welts and marks would keep you off the market for at least a week.

B&D Buddies
Author: Lambert Wilhelm
AC 235

That is some epic Cirque Du So-Gay going on there. I can't imagine that is very comfortable or sexy, unless you find the sensation of your rotator cuff ripping sensual. But then again, the very young do tend to be very flexible.

Stud Star
Author: Mark Hoffman
AC 236

Being popular is hard. It's hard work. People constantly after you for this and that. And being sexually sought after? Physically exhausting. Perhaps that explains the less than enthused posture of our cover boy. It's like he's thinking... 'damn, not another one.' While it may seem a problem some of us would welcome, I don't think we'd be able to keep up with demand after a point. I think its a matter of being careful what you wish for... because you just might get it... again, and again, and again...

Apartment House Studs
Author: Mark Hoffman
AC 237

Remember in the 1970's when swinging bachelor apartment complexes were a thing? If I ever live in an apartment complex, I would want it to be a gay one. I think it would be so much fun. Do such places exist? It would be like The Golden Girls, but we'd each have a place of our own. There would be a community room and a pool and a gym. I think it would be a gas. And once a month, all the old queens could descend on the new incoming tenants like a welcome wagon orgy! Hmm. I think I just came up with a new business plan.

Available as a pdf or e-book at Hommi Publishing.

Balling Brothers
Author: Lambert Wilhelm
AC 238

Hmm. At first glance, these two appear to be brothers from different mothers... but then, you take a look at what they've got hanging in those jocks and realize that, yes... they may indeed share the same DNA. It also appears that one of the brothers is in the process of being punished. That'll teach him to leave the toilet seat up!

Bodybuilding Buddies
Author: Lambert Wilhelm
AC 239

This one came up for sale the other day on eBay. These books sell between $30 and $149, depending on the rarity of the title. I would love to say that the market for these books has stabilized, but that is still not the case. The truly classic titles are being listed at $149 - $349! I still bid on certain offerings, but I'm very careful to bow out early when things start getting out of hand.

Looking For Mr. Goodball
Author: Mark Hoffman
AC 240

You all know the Diane Keaton film, Looking For Mr. Goodbar? The Richard Gere character remains a bit problematic in my book, but I do adore the movie. The music soundtrack, featuring Diana Ross' Love Hangover is to die for. The film does a great job of capturing the odd sexual revolution/liberation that was taking place in the discotheques of the era.

And given the subject depicted on the cover of this little opus, I'm fairly certain this one captures the unique sexual revolution/liberation movement happening in the parks of major metropolitan areas about that same time. Oh, to have lived back then. Of course, there were repercussions awaiting this generation, but, at the time, ignorance was bliss... and there was no slowing that love train.

And that's all for now.

Next week: another ten scintillating, titillating titles.

Until then...

Thanks for reading.

Nude beaches are quite the place for gawking. Sadly, there's usually very few places for hook-ups.

Ohhh
Those covers are quite interesting. I liked the previous artist more, though. This one has a penchant for overstuffed jockstraps (which I enjoy in real life, natch) but here they just seem overkill...

XOXO
