Adam's Gay Readers: Part 8 of 10

This week we continue our ten-part series of posts dedicated to Adam's Gay Reader's.

Adam's Gay Reader's were released under the Surey Books banner, and published from 1983-1991. Whether this imprint is related to other Surrey publications remains to be seen.

The books were distributed by Star Distributors, which operated out of a P.O. Box  (P.O. Box 36) at the Canal Street Station in New York City, NY.  

A total of 155 titles were published, all featuring distinctively soft, but gay-erotic illustrations, all in a watercolor-like style.

Described by The Book Merchant Jenkins as:

"One of the many gay erotic pulp novels produced in the mid to late 20th century. These short sexually explicit stories, many of which were formulaic and published in easily recognizable series with graphically illustrated covers and titillating titles each targeting a specific sexual niche, demonstrate the breadth of sexual fantasy, occupation, desire, and deviance of the emerging homosexual culture."

Hard to say for sure, but I think that's some kind of repair man knocking on that curly-haired ginger's door. Maybe cable? Or a telephone repair man? He seems to have caught our young one home and alone and hanging out in his skivvies. All in all, a variation on a tried and true porn trope - be it gay or straight. 

I once played 'VCR Repairman' with a cutie once. Knocked on his door and announced my purpose. Had a tool kit and everything. 

Needless to say - I had the right tool for the job!

You can tell this came out at the tail end of the '80's. 1988's Working Girl got us all dreaming of board room power plays and corporate success. You weren't anything unless you wore a suit! So small wonder that desire made the leap and became the subject of one of these books. Although I can't tell what' really happening here. Seems our corporate hack is not so subtly spying on a ware house worker who is moving pianos? I sure do approve of that standard shipping dock uniform: tiny shorts, weight belt, and sweat band. And, based on the positioning of one of our spy's hands - he appreciates it too!

Keeping the Piece

The titular 'piece' would be that fine, young piece of ass lying prone in that jail cell. This sub-genre is An Old West Book. So, if you're a fan of that era, I'm sure there's plenty of rustling and shoot-outs to keep your attention. Pretty sure the pistol our porn stashed figure in the foreground is packing will pop off at least a couple of times. Maybe he's a 'six-shooter'?

Bare Back Rider

I can't remember when the term 'barebacking' became a thing in the gay world. It seems to me that was after the HIV drugs had proven effective and that was back in 1996. This book came out in '89, so A.N. LeChance is a little ahead of the curve. Please enlighten me if that is not the case. 

The sub-genre for this book is An Awakening Book, though it appears to have to do with randy ranch hands with more on their mind than tending cattle. Or... maybe it's about a dude who likes to ride horses in his birthday suit? Lady Godiva did it side saddle. I'd recommend, if that's the case, this dude do the same; riding regular is hard on the taint!

According to Hommi Publishing's Big Ass List, this one is about "a sex club for surfers." And this is another novel written by one of my favorite authors - legendary golden age of porn superstar Lee Ryder. Which also means I get to post another picture of him - which is always a pleasure. If memory serves me correctly, Lee was actually a bit of a surfing enthusiast. 

He certainly knew how to 'hang ten'.

Construction worker porn - another tried and proven porn trope. I must admit, I will pause and take a gander anytime there are repairmen in the neighborhood working without their shirts. Last summer, a house on the corner had a couple of young studs working on the exterior. It was nice and hot and so were the workers, so those shirts came off. Needless to say, I had need to stroll by many a time on that day - it was well worth the effort.

Shafting Shawn

A rock climbing themed gay porn book before that was even a thing. Oh, the number of dudes posting pics of themselves working those walls in various gyms. Those waist girders and safety ropes! So sexy. I gave it a try... and it was fun, but not something I found overwhelmingly challenging - difficult, yes... but in such a controlled environment one is almost guaranteed to succeed. In the real world? Well, been there, done that, too... and all I can say is one has to rely on their instinct and not spend a great deal of time looking down. 

This book's sub-genre is categorized as a College Men Book. Geology? Can be sexy, I guess. Though it doesn't hold a candle to Archeology. I mean... Indiana Jones, am I right?

Country Cutie

This is a Farmhand Book - and it appears these two are about to help one another out, though the environment appears to be more auto junkyard than little green acres. Maybe blondie there was working the back forty when his tractor died and now he's in need of a certain part to fix it. If that's the case, I think our shirtless, porn-stashed hunk has just the part he's needing. Yeah, he'll 'fix' it... fix it real good!

Guys A-Z

Guys A-Z? Can you imagine trying to list all the dudes you've had fun with? For me, that's an impossibility, as I only remember the highlights. And even if that was all that I listed, a single book wouldn't cut it - it would have to be at least a three-volume set.

This is another College Book - and it appears blondie there is doing a lice check on his college bud. Who knew frat boys looked out for one another in such a manner.

And this one is by one of my favorite authors, which means... yes - I get to post another picture of him. Thank you, Lee Ryder. You are the gift that keeps giving.

According to Hommi Publishing's Big Ass List, this one is about a "recent grad from a broadcast school." I went to broadcasting school and graduated with honors, despite the fact that the instructors kept telling me I did not have a 'radio' voice. That's cool. I still have copies of my audition tape somewhere. Thing is, all that negative feedback killed my confidence and I never really pursued it as a career - which is too bad, because, working at an independent station, I would have had the best time spinning vinyl.

My time at the school was not 'sexy' time. In fact, based on the instructor's feedback (although they never just came out and said 'it'), I kept a lid on all of that - except when I played 'weatherman' for our mock television broadcast - then? I just let my freak flag fly and had a blast. Yep, fruity flavors everywhere!
