Male Photo Illustrated Books
Today, we take a look at Male Photo Illustrated books, another short-lived gay pulp fiction imprint brought to you by Star Distributors, LTD.
In 1979, Star Distributors, LTD. published sixteen titles under the Male Photo Illustrated books banner.
Star Distributors, LTD, home of numerous such imprints, operated out of P.O. Box 362 at the Canal Street Station in New York City.
While these carry the label 'Male Photo Illustrated' - I must say, they were pretty stingy with the pictures. Other than the cover and back cover, you get about three per book. So, not exactly elaborately illustrated.
The covers are all very similar - a butterscotch bar across the top - typically with the book number and price, dual white lines framing the all-caps title, a grainy 'hardcore' photo of some 'rough trade'-looking individuals, followed by another pair of white lines framing the imprint's name in all lower-case letters.
The back of the books feature the same white lines, another grainy 'hardcore' photo and a quote from the book.
All the books were written by anonymous authors.
These books can be found on-line occasionally for $35.00-$45.00. They are somewhat rare.
Surprisingly, I own three of the books (I have no idea where they came from) and, because of the limited number in the series - I might consider collecting these. We'll see. I mean - how many damn books do I need to own?

I just can imagine what it was like in the late seventies, to go to a bookstore and buy one of these little books...
