Lost Boys: Vintage Images of Bob Blount

Lost Boys:
Vintage Images of Bob Blount

I always like to do them in three's.

What? Well, yes, that, too... but, here, I'm referring to porn types - in this case: otters.

In previous weeks, we've learned about Nick Rodgers and Michael Braun - two classic otters from the golden age of gay porn. Today? It's all about Bob Blount.

Ah, never underestimate the value of a tombstone. As I've frequently mentioned, finding any facts about gay porn stars from this classic era is a hit and miss affair - with the emphasis on the 'miss'.

As I approached my research for Blount, I was fairly certain I'd come up empty. But then I found a site that listed his full real name and where did that lead?

Why straight to the grave, of course.

Who was this handsome southerner?

By all accounts, Bob Blount was well liked by those in the industry. Hairy-chested, with an uncut cock, a killer smile and, frequently, a thick beard, he starred in a handful of classic late 1970's gay porn films. His time in the spotlight was tragically brief, but the impression left behind is one for the ages; the image of him astride his motorcycle etched in the memories of his many fans.

Bob Blount
AKA: Robert Curtis Blount, David Dillon, Lloyd Kasper

Birthdate: December 21, 1947
Birthplace: Charlotte, NC
Death: September 6, 1979

Hair: Brown
Eyes: Hazel

Films: 5
Compilations: 3
Studios: HIS, Buckshot, Bijou

Robert Curtis Blount was born on December 21, 1947 in Charlotte, NC. Blount's father, Charles Edgar Blount, was a painter and erector of electronic advertising signs. His wife, Dorothy Colleen (Johnson) had her hands full, raising Robert, his  brother Wayne and sisters, Sheila and Barbara.

Tragedy struck during Blount's senior year in high school; his father suffered a coronary occlusion and died, at the age of 39, on December 30, 1966 - just nine days after Robert's 19th birthday.

His mother, Dorothy Collen, would remarry soon after. His stepfather, Kenneth Wayne Laney, was a truck driver who hauled produce cross-country, and loved the open road.

Once Blount graduated from Harding High School, in 1967, he, too, hit the road, finding his way to Hollywood. There, he found work as a hair stylist and began pursuing a modeling career. Swept up in the West Hollywood gay scene, Blount's striking good looks and warm southern style quickly attracted all kinds of attention.

Modeling under the name David Dillon, Roy Blakey of Honcho magazine would photograph Blount for their November 1978 issue. This, in turn, would lead to his selection as Playgirl's 'Man of the Month' for April of 1979. Here's his Playgirl profile:

Bob attributes his outspoken honesty and seemingly happy-go-lucky outlook on life to positive thinking. "I was reared that way," he proudly told us. "I never think negative thoughts, even in the face of impending crisis - the word 'depression' is not part of my vocabulary," he says.

Although Bob has no definite career goal in sight, he says he likes what he's doing today - and doesn't like to plan beyond that. "I direct all my energy to living each day to the fullest, Living is a celebration and letting as much sunshine into each day as possible is the only way to live."

In addition, he appeared in a magazine slick titled, Locker #3 for Arena Publications in 1979.

The 46-page magazine contained only two pages of ads. In it, a motorcycle riding Blount meets a blond hiker (a model identified only as 'Karl') on a mountain highway.

The two waste no time getting busy, but then decide to hop on Blount's motorcycle and check out a local bathhouse. (Numerous photos from the spread can be found below.)

The magazine proved very popular and is considered a true classic of the genre.

Soon film studios came knocking, too. After setting the screen ablaze in a scene in his debut film, Drive Shaft

Blount caught the attention of director Steve Scott, who cast him opposite superstar Al Parker in his film Inches. Their scene, during which Parker tops Blount, is considered a must-see.

Blount would also work with director Tom DeSimone in  The Frenchman and the Lovers and appear in Joe Gage's  L.A. Tool & Die. "He was said to be pleasant to work with." A co-star of his, mentioned him in an interview, stating "that he was a wonderful hairstylist and very, very charming."

His neighbor on Crescent Heights, Douglas Gilfillan, referred to Blount as "a southern gentleman" with a "winning smile." Gilfillan remembered him working as "a bartender (at) The Blue Parrot on Larrabee," and that Blount "never let (him) pay for a drink.." He also recalled "the blue 1970 Cadillac convertible and the motorcycle" Blount used to get about the city.

Sadly, that motorcycle, so much a part of his image, would lead to tragedy.

On September 6, 1979, shortly after completing work on Joe Gage's  L.A. Tool & Die, Blount's promising career would come to a screeching halt. Riding along Laurel Canyon Road, he died from injuries sustained in an accident.

His body was returned to his family in Charlotte, NC. Blount was survived by his mother, Dorothy, his step-father Kenneth, his three siblings and his grandparents.

The Charlotte News would post his obituary on Sept 10, 1979.

Services were held on Tuesday, September 11th at Hankins and Whittington Funeral Chapel, and Blount was buried at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, next to his biological father, Charles - in the plot that had been originally reserved for his mother, Dorothy.

He was 31 years old.

You can't help but come across an image or two of Blount while doing a search for any vintage gay porn star. That said, it was only recently that I was able to put a name with the face.

I do remember that magazine, though... Locker #3, but only the cover. For those of you who don't know, such magazines are sold, sealed in plastic. That's right! Your local dirty bookstore is NOT a public library.

I find his retouched photos from Colt a bit disturbing. He was much more handsome, sans beard, than those photos indicate.

A pity his life was cut so short. Who knows what he might have accomplished. And his poor mother... not only did she lose a husband, then, also, a son.

Well, that's all for today. I hope you enjoyed our brief peek into the life of Bob Blount.

Thank you for reading.

Oh, he was very handsome!
I think I like otters, BTW. And men in vintage porn look so... real? Especially the late seventies and early eighties. He was a looker. I am going to do a search for his scene with Al Parker. That duo looks like fire.
Such a pity he died so young!!

XOXO

I wonder how many gay porn models/actors did photo shoots for Playgirl?
I can see why they used him - he was an extremely handsome guy.

A lot of gay or gay for pay models appeared in Playgirl. I remember my sister brought home an issue with Kris Lord in it [under a different name] the same month he appeared in a gay mag I had bought [don't recall which one but I think it might have been Inches!!] He appeared on both covers. We both killed ourselves laughing as we both longed over the same guy wit his big thick dick. LOL

Have you ever done a posting on Kris Lord? I've often wondered what became of him. he did both gay and straight porn.
