Friday Fun: Happy National Water Safety Month!

Friday Fun:
Happy National Water Safety Month!

National Water Safety Month prepares us for recreational activities all summer long!

Whether we’re drawn to lakes and rivers or public pools and water slides, safety is a necessary concern.
Be it boat, pool, lake, or hot tub... there are a number of things to keep in mind when splashing about. Here are but a dozen...

1/ Buddy up! Always swim with a partner, every time - whether you're swimming in a backyard pool or in a lake. You never know when one of your muscles are going to tense up. A buddy can help you 'relax' it.

2/ Get skilled. It's good to be prepared. Above all, know how to swim. It's never too late to learn any skill, such as CPR. This is where a buddy, once again, comes in handy. You can practice on each other!

3/ Know your limits. If you're not a good swimmer or you're just learning to swim, don't go in water that's so deep you can't touch the bottom. And trust me, you always want to touch the bottom. The bottom wants  you touch it. Repeatedly and often.

4/ And don't try to keep up with  swimmers who are more skilled than you. That can be hard, especially if your friends are challenging you. Taking on too much can have serious, long term consequences. Overextend yourself and you're looking at least a week to recover.

5/ Swim in safe areas only. I know that taking risks is a thrill all of its own, but until you know an environment thoroughly, best to be cautious.

6/ Be careful about diving in face first. Inspect that swimming hole before proceeding. Is it clean? Fresh? Deep enough? Only after determining that it is safe, should you proceed.

7/ Keep hydrated. Drink plenty of water. Nobody likes a dry mouth or throat.

8/ Before sailing, be sure to check the weather. Dress, or undress accordingly and maybe postpone an outing if it feels or seems threatening.

9/ Stay in touch. Let someone know where you're going before hitting the water, for safety's sake. In the event that you don't resurface within an hour? They'll know where to look.

10/ No running around the pool... unless you see something you really like. Then? Best get there before anybody else poaches your spot. Unless you like sharing. Some people like sharing.

11/ Use plenty of lotion. If it has a built in SPF even better. But lay it on thick. Nothing better than well-lubricated skin.

12/ When on the water, best use a life preserver. Taking unprotected risks can result in an issue you take home with you!

Do you have some water safety advice for others? Share your experience or thoughts in the comments section.  We'd love to learn more!

However and wherever you spend time on the water, be sure to remain aware and keep safety in mind. That's how the fun can last... all summer long!

Have a lovely weekend.
Go ahead, dip your toe in the water.
If for no other reason, just to check the temp.

As you know I LOVE being on or in the water. Whether it's my pool, the ocean, a lake, a river, or a stream. I can say from experience that it's always so much more fun with a buddy or two. Or three. Or twenty-five. I'd happily join any of these guys. I'm counting the days til naked water weather. Happy Friday.

This post is simply perfection. After almost 35 straight days of rainy weather in the Pacific Northwest, your photo essay of Water Safety Month brings the promise of blue skies, sunny and warmer days ahead. Wonderful!!!

Whoa!
Some of these men really make you wanna buddy up. And I'll keep all your advice in mind. Who knows? It's swimming season!
And I had that Aaliyah CD! It came out right before she passed. Such a waste! She opened so many doors for Beyoncé...

XOXO

I love being in the water! I can hold my breath for a long time and spend ages near the bottom, but the foxy lifeguard at the pool is always too busy admiring himself to dive in and make sure I'm not gulping down too much.

P.S. I watched Jaws 2 the other day, and your header image really reminds of it!
