Run, Rudolph, Run - Chuck Berry

The 11th Day Before Xmas

Hmm, yes, this is a holiday classic, however...

It also seems Mr. Berry was placed on Santa's naughty list the year it was released (it would not be the last time, either.)

The song was first recorded by Berry in 1958 and released as a single on Chess Records. It peaked at #69 in the US.

Though it seems there was, at least initially, a bit of a question regarding who wrote the song.

Written by Johnny Marks (the writer of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer) and Marvin Brodie, Berry's 1958 45-rpm single gives writing credits to "C. Berry Music – M. Brodie"! Yes, it seems old Chuck wanted an on-going piece of that lucrative annual holiday ka-ching. Fortunately, that slight misunderstanding got itself resolved, for all subsequent versions of the song are credited solely to Marks and Brodie, with the publishing credit listed as Marks's St. Nicholas Music (ASCAP).

Turns out, Chuck 'Those ain't my cameras in the ladies loo' Berry could see into the future, for, although the song was not initially a big hit, in subsequent years, it would rise to #36 in the UK and #10 in the US! And that means airplay and sales greatly improved over the years resulting in plenty of additional ka-ching for the song's (real) writers.

Hope you're all staying off Santa's naughty list!
(Unless... you like that sort of thing.)

A oldie for sure, I always love this one.

As a grown up kid, I just watched the Rankin and Bass cartoon itself last night. Still a little treasure.

Oh, old Chuck had numerous issues throughout his career, didn't he?
