The 12 Days Before Xmas:
'Zat You, Santa Claus?
The 7th Day Before Xmas
What would the holidays be without a bit of novelty?
I wish all alter-egos were this much fun! This man has such a loveable mug. And that voice! Never mind what the Surgeon General says... sounds like cigarettes and bourbon can do a body good!
Originally popularized by Louis Armstrong, 'Zat You, Santa Claus? was recorded in 1986 by David Johansen's musical alter-ego Buster Poindexter. As Poindexter, he performed the song on Saturday Night Live as part of a skit on December 20, 1986
Johansen is best known as the lead singer of the seminal proto-punk, cross-dressing band the New York Dolls and for playing the Ghost of Christmas Past in the 1983 film, Scrooged, starring Bill Murray. His role as the taxi-driving spirit has cemented Johansen's place as part of the holiday season.
As Poindexter: he released five albums, the first of which hit #40 on the US charts and featured the international hit Hot, Hot, Hot, which climbed to #45 in the US and #38 in the UK.
His version of 'Zat You, Santa Claus? failed to chart, but with that distinctive voice, it never fails to charm.
Who's coming down your chimney this holiday season?
Ho, Ho, Ho!

David/Buster's voice is so unique. In the slightly same vain as Tom Waits.
That B&W cityscape photo...Now I recognize him!
