Wonderland Burlesque's Who's Your Mummy? Quiz

Wonderland Burlesque's
Who's Your Mummy? Quiz

That title is a bit misleading... or 'dead' on, depending on your viewpoint.

This one is all about Halloween and the monsters we've grown to love. Tis the season, and what could be more fun?

Today, share your favorite version of a given type of monster, as seen on television or at the movies. I had The Boyfriend, a horror aficionado, help me out with the categories.  To help you out, I'll be offering up a few definitions to ease your navigation.

And, in honor of Halloween, we will have a spooktacular thirteen questions!

Let's get started!

1/ Favorite Mummy

I toyed going with Imhotep from Brenden Frasier The Mummy series. Arnold Vosloo is pretty hot with his head shaved. And also considered the mummy from the Scooby Doo animated series - always a treat.

But nope.

 Movie Trailer: The Mummy (1932)

Going with the all-time classic. Boris Karloff in the 1932 film. Growing up, I put together a model of Karloff as The Mummy and have been in love with him ever since.

I remember watching it late on a Saturday night when I was a kid. Loved it.

2/ Favorite Frankenstein Monster

This one I'm giving to Michael Sarrazin. Such a beautiful man. And his great performance is one of many in 1973's Frankenstein: The True Story

Movie Trailer: Frankenstein: The True Story (1973)

Frankenstein: The True Story was a British film that was then shown in the states by NBC TV as a two part mini-series. I was captivated by it and never missed an opportunity to catch it in re-runs. It spoke to the tiny gay person living inside me, and I've never understood why.

Well, turns out the screenplay was written by none other than Christopher Isherwood and his longtime partner, Don Bachardy! And if you don't know who Christopher Isherwood is... turn in your gay card immediately, your membership has been revoked until you brush up on your gay history.

Christopher Isherwood and Don Bachardy

The whole film is quite lush in that early 1970's way and a bit ham-fisted, but I still rather adore it. Jane Seymour, James Mason, David McCullum, Leonard Whiting all deliver top notch performances. In addition, the film is graced with the presence of Agnes Moorehead, Michael Wilding, Ralph Richardson, John Gielgud, and Margaret Leighton. I believe you'll find Seymour's performance is just as captivating as Sarrazin.

The scene where doctor and monster take a ship to the north pole is stunning stuff and my favorite.

3/ Favorite Vampire

So many to choose from: David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve in the poorly edited The Hunger, Frank Langella in Dracula, Max Schreck in Nosferatu, Lauren Hutton in Once Bitten, Willem Dafoe in Shadow of the Vampire, Salma Hayek in From Dusk Till Dawn, Grace Jones in Vamp, Lilli Taylor and Annabella Sciorra in The Addiction...

and the winner is: Lina Leandersson in Let The Right One In

Movie Trailer: Let The Right One In (2008)

If you haven't seen this film... you really must. It is a work of art. (Don't bother with the 2018 American remake.)

4/ Favorite Werewolf

Lon Chaney, Jr. Hands down. He filled many a late Saturday night for me.

Movie Trailer: The Wolf Man (1941)

5/ Favorite Ghoul:

Definition: an evil spirit or phantom, especially one supposed to rob graves and feed on dead bodies.

Not sure if this meets the definition, but I am going with: Vincent Price as The Abominable Dr. Phibes. I remember being at my grandmother's house and it came on the television one Sunday afternoon. She had an old black and white set, so it would be a couple of years before I saw it in color. I adored it. It was so much fun.

Movie Trailer: The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971)

It was bloody good fun. And popular enough that it spawned a sequel, although it wasn't nearly as well received and lacked the campy enthusiasm of the first.

Movie Trailer: Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972)

I am rather amazed that no one has ever thought to remake them. I can think of a number of current Hollywood actors who look like death.

6/ Favorite Goblin:

Definition: a mischievous, ugly creature resembling a dwarf.

Again. Not quite the definition, but I think you'll allow it: Gremlins

Movie Trailer: Gremlins (1984)

I saw it the week it came out and walked away with such mixed emotions. I couldn't figure out if it was supposed to be cute or funny or mean-spirited or what... it is a mess of a film. But I loved the the little creatures. Then came the inevitable sequel...

Movie Trailer: Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990)

...which, initially, I didn't like, but have come to love. Joe Dante? A much better fit. He knew exactly what kind of film he wanted to make.

7/ Favorite Ghost

Francesca Rettondini in 2002's Ghost Ship

I remember the first time I saw Nastassja Kinski. I remember the first time I saw Isabella Rossellini.

And I will always remember the first time I saw Francesca Rettondini in this film.

Trailer: Ghost Ship (2002)

The film is problematic, but Rettondini is amazing; a sight to behold. I love the little girl (Emily Browning) in the film, too. The film has elements similar to Kubrick's The Shining and Rettondini brings a sort of Twin Peaks aesthetic to the proceedings.

8/ Favorite Insect/Human

I thought Jeff Goldblum rather sexy in The Fly.

Movie Trailer: The Fly (1986)

I was just in the process of coming out a bit in 1986, and this film confused me because I was attracted to both Goldblum and Geena Davis. For some reason it never occurred to me that you could have both. At the same time. Anyway, I digress.

9/ Favorite Space Alien

Alien. The original. The first.

Movie Trailer: Alien

There's a good reason this spawned a bunch of sequels. It's a killer film. Not an ounce of fat. And the production design related to the actual alien being is amazing.

10/ Favorite Serial Killer

Theresa Russell as the fictional Catherine, who has a taste for the finer things in life, in Black Widow.

Movie Trailer: Black Widow (1987)

11/ Favorite Greek or Roman Mythological Monster

The Gorgon/Medusa

Love the idea of snakes for hair and turning people into stone. Has there been a great Medusa movie? No. There's one coming out in 2021, but it takes place in modern times, looks slow going and seems to think Gorgons are vampires. Uma Thurman looks good, but her costume is dull and she 's stuck in a smart ass kid's movie in Percy Jackson And The Olympian: The Lightning Thief. Both Clash of the Titans movies have issues. In the first (1981), Medusa is an ugly Claymation slug, and the second film (2010) suffers from a severe case of toxic masculinity. I did like her representation in 7 Faces of Dr. Lao, but it's a slight appearance and Tony Randall's character in the film... well, I honestly have no idea what they thought they were doing.

Movie Trailer: 7 Faces of Dr. Lao (1964)

12/ Favorite Nuclear Mutant

Definition: a mutated, evolving, altered being.

Pluto from 1977's The Hills Have Eyes.

Movie Trailer: The Hills Have Eyes (1977)

Saw it at a drive-in movie theatre. Have never forgotten it.

Actor Michael Berryman suffers from hyperhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, a genetic condition that saw him born with 26 defects, including the inability to grow hair and an elongated skull. He haunted my dreams for the longest time. Parents: don't let strangers take your children to drive-in movies.

13/ Favorite Mad Scientist Animal/Human Hybrid

Where Science Fiction and Horror meet. 2009's Splice is an obvious choice. It's well done, and as beautiful as it is chilling. But I'm going with 1973's Sssssss, which, when I was a child, made me cry and terrified me. Parents should never leave their children alone in front of a television set.

Movie Trailer: Sssssss (1973)

I have nothing but sympathy for ssssssssnakes.

You just can't beat the old guys. Lon Chaney jr and Boris Karlof. But, for ghouls, I go for the cast of Rocky Horror.

4. American Werewolf in London.
5. ???
6. Oh, I'm with you on this one, too.
7. The Thin Man movies. Nick, Nora, and Asta were the Bees Knees.

9. Mork.
10. Darren Criss in the mini series "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story"
11. The Cracken
12. ???
13. ???
As you can tell, I'm not much into the horror genre - unless it's meant to be funny. Therefore I like the rewrite Bobby Pickett did.

Whoa, Upton!
Ok, let's go!
1. Arnold Vosloo. Forever. Once I saw him in The Mummy, I was sold. Can you imagine Brenden and Arnold sandwich?
2. Aaron Eckhart in I, Frankenstein. Yes, please.
3. Selena, in Underworld. I wanted to wear everything she was wearing and bang my 4. favorite werewolf: Scott Speedman playing Michael in the same movie.
5. I cannot remember any ghouls.
6. Hahaha love the Gremlins!
7. Patrick Swayze in Ghost. Duh.
8. Jeff Goldblum, of course.
9. The creature (and the astronaut) in Sputnik, a Russian movie that gave me nightmares. The doomed astronaut is a true romantic hero.
10. Ross Lynch as Jeffrey Dahmer. Chilling and handsome.
11. I have my fav mythological monster slayer: Sam Worthington as Perseus.
12. OMG The Hills Have Eyes is terrifying.
13. Splice. Hands down. Her obsession with Adrien Brody? Can't blame her.

1. Absolutely Karloff! I fell in love with his name in that old original: Ardeth Bay. Amazing name, and I want it in another life.
2. In agreement, that gorgeous Quebecer takes it for me. And loved Mason as Polydori.
3. Delphine Seyrig as Countess Elizabeth Bathory in Daughters of Darkness. If you haven't seen it, get a chance. Directed by Harry Kumel (it's on Dailymotion last I saw). There is a great clip of him in an online interview complaining about 'the Canadian woman' Danielle Ouimet, ruining a shot. It's hilarious. Delphine is AMAZING.
4. As sexy as Michael Sheen gets: Underworld (2009).
5. Handsome David Bruce as The Mad Ghoul (1943). Scared the pants off me (when I was a kid). Has the wonderful Universal intro (the crystal globe) and that wicked brass theme.
6. Hmmm don't have one.
7. Robert Donat as Murdoch Glourie in The Ghost Goes West (1935).
8. Vincent D'Onofrio as Edgar in Men in Black (1997).
9. Michael Rennie as Klaatu in The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951).
10. Christian Bale in American Psycho (2000).
11. Harryhausen's skeletons in Jason and the Argonauts (1963).
12. Grant Williams as Scott Carey in The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957).
13. Bit of a stretch, but the computer in Demon Seed (1977) impregnates Julie Christie haha!

I consider The Gremlins a Christmas movie and Die Hard. If the events take place during the holiday season, its a Christmas movie. Hahaha

That is the most well hung mummy I've ever seen!

Oh, dear.... I don't watch a lot of horror films (and never have), so my selections may be a bit peculiar.

1, Favourite Mummy? No idea. I have seen the Brendan Fraser film a long while ago, but I don't really remember it.

2, Favourite Frankenstein's Monster? Rocky, from the Rocky Horror Show. Yum! Or Edward Scissorhands.

3, Favourite Vampire? Mitchell, from Being Human (the UK TV show). Or maybe Count Count from Sesame Street?

4, Favourite Werewolf? Nina, again from Being Human

5, Favourite Ghoul? Can't remember/think of one.

6, Favourite Goblin? The same as you - those pesky Gremlins!

7, Favourite Ghost? Annie, from Being Human again.

8, Favourite Insect/Humam? Ensign D'Vana Tendi when she gets turned into a giant scorpian creature in Star Trek: Lower Decks episode "The Spy Humongous" (This is a bit of a cheat since scorpians aren't insects, and Tendi is an Orion, not a human).

9, Favourite Space Alien? Oh, so many! But, going with aliens that have given me terrifying nightmares, it's a toss-up between the Alien/s Alien, Daleks, or the Borg.

10, Favourite Serial Killer? The Grand High Witch, from The Witches.

11, Favourite Greek or Roman Mythological Monster? The Centaurs.

12, Favourite Nuclear Mutant? The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo version)

13, Favourite Mad Scientist Animal/Human Hybrid? I don't know if this counts, but I'm going with Professor Bunsen Honeydew from the Muppets.
