Acquired Tastes XLIII: Gay Pulp Fiction, Part 31 - Brandon House Books / 4 of 4

Acquired Tastes XLIII:
Gay Pulp Fiction, Part 31
Brandon House Books / 4 of 4

This is the final post dedicated to Brandon House Books.

As you have learned last few weeks, Brandon House published works between 1935 and 2007 and were one of the three largest adult publishers in the late 1960s. You can learn a lot more about them, including an inside look at how they conducted business, in my previous post

The titles shown in these posts were mostly published in the years 1966-70. Today's books were all published in 1970.

Here are 11 more great titles...

--- ---

Gay John
Author: John
#6073
"An adult novel of men in the womanless world."

This is one of those 'anonymous' tomes.

Although it does bring to mind John Gay, dramatist and author of The Beggar's Opera.

The tagline was used for most of the books published during this time period. Personally, I was unfamiliar with the phrase - "the womanless world."

I mean, it's not like we didn't appreciate them from afar.

Daisies In A Chain
Author: Kym Allyson
#6082
"An adult novel of men in the womanless world."

Back Cover: "The Gay Set. In a small New Hampshire town, undeterred by most of the respected citizenry, there existed an exclusive, secret community—a homosexual community. And they fed upon each other as any underground group must: with avarice, jealousy, hate, love, shame, and lust!"

Sounds like another Boys in the Band knock-off. Which is always fun! You know, in a Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? kind of way...

Kym Allison is Gothic novelist, John H. Kimbro wrote eight gay-oriented titles under the pseudonym Kym Allyson. You can learn more about him by visiting here, look for a book called You're a Hard Man, Jamie Coxman and then hit the link. That will take you to another post. Then just look for a book titled The Boy Watcher. There's a picture of him and a brief bio.

By the way, Kindle users... there is a downloadable version of this book out there! $2.99 - 4.99!

New Meat
Author: Mike Carter
#6089
"An adult novel of men in the womanless world."

Well, there's nothing like being 'new meat'.

That's why I love to travel! You go somewhere you've never been before? It's all new, honey!

--- ---

Queens Of The Road
Author: Jack Milton
#6096
"An adult novel of men in the womanless world."

This is the only title credited to Jack Milton.

Well, don't cross 'em. 'Cuz those queens? They'll cut a bitch.

--- ---

Soldiers of Sodom
Author: Jonathan Martin
#6108
"An adult novel of men in the womanless world."

So, here's a case of an author selling the goods to more than one publisher, with a slight title change. This happened quite frequently, actually. All the author or publisher would have to do is alter the title a bit and change some of the references... if they bothered at all.

Tagline for the Lamda Press edition reads:

"Christopher and Link shared a bond of love no one could break - until an explosive day in Nicaragua."

--- ---

The Queer Letters
Author: Kym Allyson
#6119
"An adult novel of men in the womanless world."

Another from Mr. Kimbro.

Back cover: "Dale's pen pal taught him everything about homosexual love that could be put on paper. But experience, he discovered, is still the best teacher.... Gay males!"

Oh, and Kindle users? $1.99

The Son of Fanny Hill
Author: Anonymous
#6021

This title is frequently credited to John Cleland, who wrote the infamous erotic classic, Fanny Hill. However... that is highly doubtful.

Back cover: "His birth was a well-kept secret. His early life one of drudgery and boredom. But in young manhood, his search for patronage led him into the most twisted paths of pleasure and perversion 18th Century England could offer. In this book, his own letters reveal the whole truth: the bold, candid, bawdy painful and gay story of Rod Hill."

--- ---

The Underbrush Boys
Author: Patrick Doyle
#6127

This sounds like it could be about all the boys that hang out at my favorite prairie!

Patrick Doyle is a familiar name to those of you who have been reading this series. He's written 15 novels in this genre.

Teleny or The Reverse of the Medal
Attributed To: Oscar Wilde
Introduction: Jack Hirschman Ph.D.
#6261

Teleny is one of those classic pieces of erotica that was published under a number of different imprints.

We learned all about it, here. (spoiler alert)

--- ---

These two titles appear out of sequence. I base this on their lack of a publishing number and the difference in price points. They both represent porn masquerading as pseudo-psychological studies. Titillation comes in all forms, I guess.

Sex Outcast
Author: James C. Rogers
"The Homosexual Mystique."
"For the first time! A bold, definitive documentary of the facts behind the up surge of homosexuality in the modern world. A frank and startling compendium of the feelings, philosophy and behavior of men and women who embrace homophilic love! Here is an unabashed look at the homosexual in society today!"

Sodom USA
Author: Johnny Shearer
"Is the space age whirling us into all out perversion?"
"A frank and naked look at the current off-beat quirks of America's sex mad culture... including some you've never even heard of!

Well, I highly doubt that last statement. I mean... try me.

--- ---

Well, that concludes our look at Brandon Books. Next week we'll take a look at a few covers from their Barclay imprint.

Until then...

Thanks for reading.

Love that the titles are so blunt.

Those last two are are very peculiar. Very telling that at that time they were trying to 'explain' being gay. The thing is that it was all very yellow journalism.
And 'in a womanless world'??

XOXO
