Wonderland Burlesque's
The 12 Days Before Christmas - Day Four
The Drifters
On this, the fourth day of Wonderland Burlesque's countdown to Xmas, we take a look at a true classic. This one must be listened to closely, in order to appreciate just how looney it is.
You may remember this version of the Bing Crosby holiday classic from films such as 1990's Home Alone (when Macaulay Culkin puts on his father’s aftershave and makes 'the face'), Mixed Nuts (Steve Martin, 1994) and The Santa Clause (Tim Allen, 1994). Sung by doo-wop group The Drifters (featuring Bill Pinkney on lead bass and Clyde McPhatter on tenor). their version went to #2 on the R&B Chart in December of 1954 and, in 1955, it went to #80 on Billboard's Top 100 Chart.
I thought this cartoon - an animated Christmas card by Joshua Held - perfectly captured the spirit of the song's arrangement.
